This page details one or more prototype versions of Barkley, Shut Up And Jam: Gaiden.
Mac port of Barkley, Shut Up & Jam: Gaiden now available. Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden sequel announced. The totally baller full title is too long for twitter. Subscribe to The Eurogamer. The fullest possible title for this game is: Tales of Game's Presents Chef Boyardee's Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, Chapter 1 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa. But that just seems too silly to reproduce in full. The game takes on from a game called Barkley: Shut Up and Jam! Which was a sporting title featuring basketballer Charles Barkley. If you walk away from Barkley 2 without having been edutained, we will have failed in our role as edutainers. We are also super excited to announce that for the first time ever, Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden is playable on the Mac. The Mac port was made by Leon Arnott and he did an amazing job with it. Barkley 1 is completely free and will.
Warning: The prototype wiki article you are about to read is canon.
A prototype of Barkley, Shut Up And Jam: Gaiden was released, along with the Vidcon Pack, by Tales of Game's on December 13th, 2012.

General Differences
To do: There's more than just this. |
Easily the biggest change between the prototype and the final game is that the prototype runs on the RPG Maker 2003 engine, instead of the Game Maker engine that the final uses. Because of this, a few things were not able to be added to the game (or look/act different):
Menu
- While both games use a resolution of 640x480, the prototype forces the game to be fullscreen, as is the case with most RPG Maker 2003 games.
- The Tales of Game's splash screen hasn't been added.
- The options menu isn't present.
Overworld
- The sprinting meter hasn't been added yet.
- Portraits do not appear in dialogue boxes.
- There are no vending machines in the prototype.
- In the prototype, more items tell what function they serve in the description. Some, like the Ecto Cooler, heal specific amounts of VP instead of a certain percentage.
Battles
- Enemies have no animations in battle. Party members do, but their sprites are very choppy.
- The final allows the player to select different attacks for every party member, which is completely missing in the prototype.
Story Differences
The main story is present in the prototype, although there are a few exclusions. When a new game is started, however, it begins in the B-ball Dimension with Barkley, Vinceborg, and Zalatar, the turkey living in Cesspool X (more info below).
Neo New York and Sewers
Prototype | Final |
---|
- Barkley's voice and picture in the intro aren't present.
- The scene where the two punks steal money from the hobo is missing.
- If checked, Barkley will find an Ecto Cooler in the oven. This takes up two text boxes in the prototype, and one in the final.
- After talking to Chin, he gives Barkley some items. In the prototype, this was only five Ecto Coolers; the final game keeps this and adds three Steroids and two Tobaccos.
- The flashback to Neo New York before the Chaos Dunk is missing.
- The button sequences are missing in the prototype.
- The sliding puzzle in the B-Ball Catacombs is missing.
- Two treasure chests in the Sewers are different.
- A room that contains a Chicken Dew in the final has a Jam Spirit in the prototype.
- A room that contains the note from Dr. Allard (and another Chicken Dew) has a Team Spirit in the prototype.
- At the end of the sewers, a guard forces you to pay him Neo-Shekels in order to climb down a ladder. It costs a (relatively) reasonable 600 Neo-Shekels in the prototype, which was driven up to 5,000 in the final.
Proto NNY and Liberty Island
- Ezekiel and Eli, the two guys in the bottom-left corner in the Doctor's Office, are in different seats in the prototype.
- Guns Guns Guns, the store in Proto Neo New York, doesn't have Hundley's Casino yet.
- You cannot give the F.I.N.A.L. G.U.N. to Mark or the Square-Enix-Goya agent in the prototype.
- Ghost Dad doesn't explode into lots of ghosts when he is defeated.
- The adventure game gimmick of Liberty Island is missing, as well as the entire subplot with the Diabeastie.
- The flashback to the Chaos Dunk had some notable changes in the final.
- The final uses sprites from Barkley: Shut Up and Jam! for the basketball players, while the prototype uses in-game sprites.
- The announcer in the prototype is ambiguous. They were changed to Dick Vitale in the final.
- The line talking about the Knicks obtaining a point more than the Suns is missing.
Outskirts and B-Ball Dimension
- The Outskirts went through some minor changes.
- Ghastly Darklord is missing.
- The bestiary owned by the Animayor was put onto a single screen and acquired pictures in the final.
- The Chup Mines had several additions and changes.
- Zorf Gobletwind doesn't attend the Duergar rally in the prototype; it's Elrog Dreadgem instead.
- The picture that appears when saying 'Foe' to Sha'kwan Dwarfmalice is larger in the prototype.
- The hands of the two races during the Duergar and Genie treaty aren't present in the prototype. Also, the window that holds the choices is at the top of the screen in the prototype, while it's on the bottom in the final.
- The Genie Lamp serves different purposes in the prototype and final. While the final's lamp summons Kazaam and allows the party to benefit from one of three wishes, the prototype's lamp, when used in battle, deals massive damage to all enemies.
- Some minor changes have been added to the B-Ball Dimension in the final.
- The cutscene that happens when you blow the Dimensional Whistle isn't there in the prototype.
- Dick Vitale isn't in the dimension.
Cuchulainn's Tomb and Necron 5
- Cuchulainn's Tomb went through some pretty big changes.
- The opening area in Cuchulainn's Tomb is very different in the prototype! In the prototype, the opening area spans five rooms, while the final is contained to a single one. The area with two chests contains the Tupperware Armor in the prototype, while the final replaces it with some Pumps.
- The labyrinth, in the prototype, consists of a big maze with several siderooms containing chests, one of the rooms being the way out of the maze. In the final, the chests are all kept in one room, and the goal is to activate crystals in a specific pattern.
- The separate paths leading to the libraries are all different.
- Balthios' path consists of a large maze in the prototype, while the final has you fight three enemies.
- Cyberdwarf's path consists of a single room in the prototype, while there's a pit that has an invisible path in the final.
- Hoopz' path is largely the same as the final. However, the path goes Left, Left, Right (the final goes Left, Up, Left, Right), and the eyes on the two statues don't light up.
- Barkley's path doesn't have a room leading up to the library in the prototype. The final has a puzzle based on his jersey number.
- The hall leading up to the Shimmerglobe is empty in the prototype, while the final has a vending machine and a pump.
- The Necron 5 went through some large changes, too.
- The prototype has Michael Jordan destroy Vinceborg, whereas the final has Vinceborg resisting B.L.O.O.D.M.O.S.E.S.'s control over him, and self-destructing in the process.
- The Desolate B-Ball Court is missing in the prototype. Because of this, the fight with Jordan and the escape pods are in the room before it.
Other
To do: fill this segment out |
- In the Deathtemple, the 'VAMP Commando' picture isn't in the prototype; it's replaced with a text bubble.
Removed Characters
Two noteworthy characters were removed in the final game; one that was used for debugging, and another that's... odd, to say the least.
Zalatar
The turkey from Cesspool X can be played in the prototype. However, he's a debug character with extraordinarily high stats and a 100% critical hit chance. Several things are noteworthy about Zalatar;
- He is the only playable character who can reach level 99 (all other characters can only get to level 60)
- Zalatar automatically attacks in battle, similar to Umaro from Final Fantasy VI.
- He can equip the Soccerball and Jersey (as well as his own weapon, 'my names zalatar').
gope
A rather strange character, gope is essentially the same as the seven blank RPG Maker 2003 hero assets in-game, but with a name and (blank) overworld sprites. It's possible that this was a developer joke.

All additions, changes, and removals are bolded.

Because of the addition of the Desolate B-Ball Court, and the changing of the death of Vinceborg, this bit of text was removed.
Graphical Differences
To do: There might be a few more overworld sprite differences. Also, check the maps. |
Title Screen
Final |
---|
The title screen's background received various makeovers.
- The title itself is separate from the background in the final version.
- Some lightning coming out of the basketball was added.
- Barkley's body is now lit up, and basketball shorts were added.
- Hoopz' head and body were made wider, and some light was added to his hair.
- Balthios' ear, hair, and collar were redrawn, and a blue glow was added to his face.
- Cyberdwarf had his entire face redrawn.
Overworld Sprites
Final | |
---|---|
The sprites for Barkley and Shadow Barkley were slimmed down and given less amateurish shading in the final.
Final |
---|
Balthios' sprite in the prototype has a lot less detail. The sprite for the Ultimate Hellbane wasn't changed, though.
Final | |
---|---|
Hoopz Barkley's portrait was changed to Eddie 'Skate' Hunter from the Streets of Rage series, namely his mugshot from the International version of Streets of Rage 3, while his overworld sprite was redone to make him look more like a teenager.
Ghost Dad
Final |
---|
Ghost Dad's battle sprite is completely different in the prototype!

Musical Differences
Shut Up And Jam Gaiden 2
Song Names
Most songs in the prototype are called by their alternate title. A few, though, have names that are different from both the file's name and the alternate title.
- 'Deathtemple in Hell' (_death) is called 'God Bless It'.
- 'wh o that smell john basedow' (_basedow) is simply called 'John Basedow'.
- 'arhwetoiahretio' (_runaway) is called 'Super! Super! Gay! Gay!'
Duplicate Songs
Four alternate versions of Cuchulainn's Tomb's music (islam is the party religion) are in the files of the prototype!
- 8 is basically the final's version of the song, but at a slightly higher pitch.
- 7 is slightly muddled, and the repeating chiptune in the background is quieter.
- 4 is similar to 7, but has had its pitch increased by 20 percent. The violins in the background are louder, too.
- 2 is 4 at a slower tempo, but in an even higher pitch. The drums aren't as distinguished.
Two more songs have duplicates;
- Cyberdwarf's theme has two, but they're pretty much the same except for their name.
- The Space Jam theme has a duplicate that is slightly quieter than the original.
Airbud Symphony
This song appears in the earlier versions of the final, but it was later replaced with 'falling down'.
Unused Graphics
An unused variant of the title exists in the files. The only thing different from the one used is a missing apostrophe in 'Game's'.
Within the battle sprites for Barkley and Vinceborg are some of the animations from the 'Heavy Armor' battle sprites that come with RPG Maker 2003.
Cyberdwarf has three unused portraits, all of which show more of his hair. The first portrait has lighter colors than the other two, while the third one adds a border and some 'pupils' to his eyes. There is a fourth unused portrait, which is just the final one that has been moved down a pixel by accident.
The map that holds all of the maps for Proto Neo New York and Liberty Island has this lovely message for CBoyardee.
Barkley Shut Up And Jam Gaiden
It’s been 6+ years but we’ve finally updated Barkley 1. Why you ask? Well Vinceborg’s eye laser, while being OP A HECK, had a sound effect that was much much much too short. So, on some machines, running a certain version of the sound library that was built in, and then only some of the time, a memory glitch would crash the game. The error was difficult to fully diagnose, and reared its head gloriously during the Awesome Games Done Quick event we did a few months ago. Check out what happens when Barkley performs the Chaos Dunk at the end.
Barkley Shut Up And Jam Gaiden Download Machine
Anyways, we remedied this by simply extending the length of the sound effect so that it doesn’t repeat over and over and then also putting in a check to make sure that any sound doesn’t get spammed to play multiple times simultaneously.

So there you go, 6 years later. Barkley works.
